The challenges of Nearshoring, Softlanding and IMMEX program in Mexico

We know that there are Chinese who want to set up in Mexico and authorize them in the IMMEX program. These are interesting times. They say thousands of companies from China are coming because of the Nearshoring phenomenon. It became sexy Mexico and we have this alternative of Softlanding in Mexico, with customers with softlanding operating from China, Europe and South America. Just helping our Softlanding customers has led us to identify the misinformation that exists in understanding the authorization of the Temporary Imports Program in Mexico (IMMEX), its advantages and savings in taxes.

That’s why we decided to do this post, to explain what IMMEX is and what we suggest to you to do to make an informed decision about the steps to follow in Mexico.

To explain it easily: the IMMEX is an instrument to encourage the exports of our country Mexico. To have it, you must obtain permission. Through this authorization, companies import goods temporarily and carry out a production process within Mexico. They subsequently export the finished product once the industrial process has been carried out in Mexico. In case of IMMEX authorization, it could mean deferring the payment of the General Import Tax, the Value Added Tax and, where applicable, the compensatory fees.

To apply for authorization must be legal persons producing resident in the national territory and/or export service providers that meet the requirements of the IMMEX program, can obtain the authorization.

The benefit requires carrying out in our country an industrial or service process intended for the manufacture, processing or repair and/or the provision of export services.

Sensitive products are those temporary imported goods listed in Annex II of the IMMEX Decree and Annex 3.3.2 of the Economy Secretariat Rules Agreement.

The program works by obtaining a temporary import certificate that allows goods to enter the country without paying taxes.
